Online Reputation Management – Why You Should Care

Everyone is on about the importance of social media these days and how important it is to touch base with clients past, present and future but should we monitor what we say, how we say it and how we respond to what is being said about us?

The short answer is yes, we should but why should we, why is it so important?

In the past if a client wrote a note of thanks we may have displayed it on a desk, wall or notice board and looked at it regularly patting ourselves on the back for a job well done but if a complaining letter arrived it was more than likely filed in the customer file and forgotten about. Eventually both the thank you card and the complaint letter would be filed under ‘B’ for bin or ‘R’ for recycling.
Today the internet means that anything said good or bad is likely to be around…well forever. This means that potential JV partners, business partners, prospective clients and even your bank manager will be able to see everything that has ever been written about you and how you have handled it.

Now is the time to take positive action and

develop an online reputation management policy.

You need to decide as a sole trader, partnership, small business or huge company how you are going to proceed with social media and the creation of a policy that will maintain your online reputation.

This is not something to put on the agenda for next year, it is an issue that needs to be dealt with now. Social media is here to stay and its going to be important to your business so get a head of the game and write your online reputation management policy now, your reputation may depend on it.
